Strong Naming

Hi,

I have an ASP.NET app.

I wrote some assemblies in VB.NET which my ASP app calls.

I want to Strong Name these assemblies.

Anyone know any good sites that goes throughhow to do this
step by step?

Thanks,
CSure, here's a useful link straight from the horse's mouth:

Strong Naming a dll and registering in GAC

Hi,

I am working with Microsoft Configuration Application Blocks and whenever I
create a new app and have to use it, I have to reference it and it makes a
local copy in the bin directory.
so if i created 4 apps then there are local copies of these blocks...

I tried to use GACUtil to register these dlls but it gives me an error
saying that its not having a strong name, i tried sn tool but unsuccessful.
I have tried to strong name a dll but the way i did it was in an app where I
first created a strong name and then referenced it in the app before
compiling the dll and then used GAC to register it...
but this is some external dll...

I mean is my thought process right or I am totally off base...
Please advice,
Stephenstephen,
You cannot install an assembly in the GAC without a strong name so you need
to solve this problem first.
After that, you can put copies of strong named, GAC-ed assemblies in a
single folder and reference these from your various apps; you can turn off
the copy local feature, and the copy in the GAC will be automatically used.
Hope that helps,
Peter

Strongly-Typed State Class in UIAPB

I'm trying to use a strongly-typed State class in my UIAPB-based app.
It looks like state is being "over-persisted" if there is such a
thing. I'm using session state persistence.
I start a session, navigate a between a couple of different "UI
Processes", and then end it (even going as far as calling
Page.Session.Abandon() in the final page of my app.) I start a new
session, I see a new task Id, but information from the state from the
previous session is being picked up in the new session.
I have made sure that I complete all the UI tasks and that there are
no references (as far as I can tell) to the existing custom state
object when I end the session.
This is driving me nuts - any suggestions?
Thanks,

stuck and confused

Ok, here is my scenario, I have an asp web app that i'm converting to .net.
The app reads files and loads the data into SQL db, now, in my file it has
numbers like, 125.25, 3363.33, 69.00, and when the asp version uploads the
files into the db and I run query analyzer I see the numbers as they are in
the file, but when I upload the same file in my .net version of the app, I
see the numbers like this in query anaylzer: 125.25636363, 3363.3320001,
69.0000001. The columns are defined as floats in the table, and I changed the
types in the code from float to double and even tried decimal, but no luck,
any suggestions on how to get the numbers to show correctly from my .NET app
when I run query anaylzer?how are you going from the text file to code to the database?

are you using xxx.Parse() (like float.Parse()) on a string or something...

the code isn't doing float.parse(), i picked the app up from a former
developer and trying to fix the mess left behind. He's reading the text
files, creating a datatable, then inserting that into the table. in the
datatable, he has something like this:
aColumn = new DataColumn(SALESAMOUNT, System.Type.GetType("System.Single"));

is he then doing somethng like

DataRow row = databable.NewRow();
row["SalesAmount"] = someValue;
or
row[12] = someValue;

?

if so, what type is someValue? a string?

well...so far everything looks ok...

can you put a breakpoint and see what format arr[1] is in. My guess is that
it's happening when the value is first loaded from the text file (perhaps
into arr[1]). Can you provide more chunks of code?

I did that, and all the way through I can see the number being uploaded as
125.25, so could it be a SQL thing transforming the numbers or something I'm
missing?

If the SQL column is a float, you might wanna try changing it to a decimal.
You'll also want to make sure your SqlCommand has a decimal type. Something
like:

command.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
command.CommandText = "INSERT INTO SomeTable (SalesAmount) VALUES
(@.SalesAmount)";
command.Parameters.Add("@.SalesAmount", SqlDbType.Decimal);
command.Parameters[0].SourceColumn = "SalesAmount";

I can't change the column in the db due to it "replication" to other tables,
etc. I did make it a decimal in the SQLCommand, but still no go. I can see
it in the table correctly via enterprise manager, but when i do a query via
Query analzer is where I'm seeing the incorrect number format.

stuck and confused

Ok, here is my scenario, I have an asp web app that i'm converting to .net.
The app reads files and loads the data into SQL db, now, in my file it has
numbers like, 125.25, 3363.33, 69.00, and when the asp version uploads the
files into the db and I run query analyzer I see the numbers as they are in
the file, but when I upload the same file in my .net version of the app, I
see the numbers like this in query anaylzer: 125.25636363, 3363.3320001,
69.0000001. The columns are defined as floats in the table, and I changed th
e
types in the code from float to double and even tried decimal, but no luck,
any suggestions on how to get the numbers to show correctly from my .NET app
when I run query anaylzer?how are you going from the text file to code to the database?
are you using xxx.Parse() (like float.Parse()) on a string or something...

the code isn't doing float.parse(), i picked the app up from a former
developer and trying to fix the mess left behind. He's reading the text
files, creating a datatable, then inserting that into the table. in the
datatable, he has something like this:
aColumn = new DataColumn(SALESAMOUNT, System.Type.GetType("System.Single"));

can you put a breakpoint and see what format arr[1] is in. My guess is that
it's happening when the value is first loaded from the text file (perhaps
into arr[1]). Can you provide more chunks of code?

If the SQL column is a float, you might wanna try changing it to a decimal.
You'll also want to make sure your SqlCommand has a decimal type. Something
like:
command.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
command.CommandText = "INSERT INTO SomeTable (SalesAmount) VALUES
(@.SalesAmount)";
command.Parameters.Add("@.SalesAmount", SqlDbType.Decimal);
command.Parameters[0].SourceColumn = "SalesAmount";

Stuck with launching IE from Web App

PROBLEM # 1:
------
I am trying to launch a website in IE on the server from a C#/ASP.NET
web service. I am using the System.Diagnostics namespace and the
Process class methods. The IE process DOES seem to be running (since
there are IExplore.exe entries in the Task Manager), but no matter what
I do, there is no window on the screen (I cant see it). Here's the
code:

<code>
System.Diagnostics.Process proc = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
proc.StartInfo.FileName= @dotnet.itags.org."C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\IEXPLORE.exe";
proc.StartInfo.Arguments="http://www.mysite.com";
proc.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = false;
proc.StartInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Maximized;
proc.Start();
</code
From what I've seen online, some ppl claimed to have done it
successfully while others said it is not possible to execute
applications from a web-based application (<a
href="http://www.dotnet247.com/247reference/msgs/20/103726.aspx">See
Here</a>). Can someone please confirm if it is really possible or not?

I do notice that all the IE processes in the Task Manager that my web
service "runs", the user is "NETWORK SERVICE", while the user for the IE
process that I manually open is "Administrator". Is this enough proof
that it is not possible. I would like to know how some ppl were able to
do it.

PROBLEM # 2
------
Well, the fact that the IE application does run in a hidden manner
(Problem # 1) is actually more preferable for me <b>IF</b> there is some
why that I can save the HTML file that is supposedly loaded into IE.
For example, if I could actually see the IE window, I would write a
script that would select FILE -> SAVE AS and so on...
However, without seeing the window, is there a way I can save the HTML
file being "displayed"?

Thanks for your help. However, I already saw that MS article. And I
already tried it. It didn't work because I later realize that it's only
for II 5.0. IIS 6.0 uses a different worker process scheme. I havent
been able to find any similar article for II6 yet.

Here's the
code:
<code>
System.Diagnostics.Process proc = new System.Diagnostics.Process();
proc.StartInfo.FileName= @dotnet.itags.org."C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\IEXPLORE.exe";
proc.StartInfo.Arguments="http://www.mysite.com";
proc.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = false;
proc.StartInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Maximized;
proc.Start();
</code>
From what I've seen online, some ppl claimed to have done it
successfully while others said it is not possible to execute
applications from a web-based application (<a
href="http://www.dotnet247.com/247reference/msgs/20/103726.aspx">See
Here</a> ). Can someone please confirm if it is really possible or not?
I do notice that all the IE processes in the Task Manager that my web
service "runs", the user is "NETWORK SERVICE", while the user for the IE
process that I manually open is "Administrator". Is this enough proof
that it is not possible. I would like to know how some ppl were able to
do it.
PROBLEM # 2
--
Well, the fact that the IE application does run in a hidden manner
